Journalists Protesting Censorship Get Censored

More than sixty journalists gathered together in protest Monday outside Sudan’s parliament building to speak out against state censorship of the media. The men and women were subsequently arrested and only released after promising to return for trial.

Despite a 2005 peace deal allowing freedom of expression and the media, the Sudanese government keeps a watchful eye over published material. In fact, each of the country’s newspapers has been assigned a security officer who reviews editorial content every evening. What gets published the following morning comes at the discretion of these officers who cut, crop, copy, and paste as they wish.
