Arrested After Speaking Out Against Bashir
Last Monday, Sudanese Islamist leader Hassan al-Turabi stated that Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir should accept responsibility for Darfur and surrender to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for the good of the country.
On Wednesday, two days later, Turabi was arrested.
Concerns for Turabi’s health while being held in prison are great. Turabi is 76 years old, and his family has reportedly been prevented from providing him with special food for a restricted diet and necessary medicine.
Turabi and Bashir were once close allies before a falling out in the 1990s.
