In a recent NY Times article, Outdoors and out of reach, studying the brain, a couple of researchers contend that heavy use of technology inhibits deep thought. I for one have noticed more and more that electronics are making me stupid.

How many of us are losing the capacity to pause and think more contemplative thoughts?
Are we filling our lives with technology and sacrificing deeper, more authentic relationships?
Have we begun to settle for being quick to judge and reactive in our actions as if this is as good as it gets?

This is part of what I cherish about my training in Bioenergetics. Out of the deadening influences, time and time again, I return to get back into my body to breathe, feel, and calm down. Suddenly new thoughts emerge, and they are the deeper, more contemplative and meaningful. Connections between issues become more obvious, and my capacity to be present to hear and be with others also comes back on line.

Everything we do in Living Ubuntu has a backdrop of recognizing human connections, and inter-connections. Of equal importance is the recognition that we are part of nature. Also, this September we are hosting a screening of The Greatest Silence: Rape in the Congo. In hearing of mass atrocities, it is tempting to designate perpetrators as sub-human. This remarkable film highlights one of the world’s worst and under-recognized conflict zones. It also offers the unique and controversial perspective of interviews that include both survivors and perpetrators. All details are below.

Since 1998 a brutal war has been raging in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Over 5 million people have died. Tens of thousands of women and girls who have been systematically kidnapped, raped, mutilated and tortured by soldiers from both foreign militias and the Congolese army. Why doesn’t the world know about these women? Why do they suffer in silence?
