Are we prepared for this?

By now I am sure you are all well aware of the extreme, heartbreaking devastation following the not just one large earthquake, but multiple large earthquakes, in Nepal. We tend to think of earthquakes as something that ‘just happen’ and are utterly out of our control, but maybe not always. Many have pointed to ‘fracking’ as a contributor in some areas in the U.S. – and — what about climate change?

“Climate change may play a critical role in triggering certain faults in certain places where they could kill a hell of a lot of people,” says Professor McGuire. Some of his colleagues suspect the process may already have started.

Meanwhile, locally, Fire Officials Say San Diego Should Brace For ‘Unprecedented’ Fire Season.

Climate change > drought > fire > trauma > increased risk of domestic violence, trouble learning, substance abuse…

Are we prepared for this?

At this point in our history we can’t afford to be ignorant about climate change and we certainly cannot afford to be ignorant about trauma either. We need to do what can still be done to slow climate change, employ best adaptations to expected changes, and exponentially increase the number of people who are trauma-informed and trauma-trained. This is scary stuff, but often it calms us a bit when we can find our own empowerment – knowing what we can do – and mobilizing to do it.
