Expanding the Circle of Compassion

Solutions to Climate Change – Thursday May 28

Because, underneath all of this is the real truth we have been avoiding: climate change isn’t an ‘issue’ to add to the list of things to worry about, next to health care and taxes. It is a civilizational wake-up call. A powerful message—spoken in the language of fires, floods, droughts, and extinctions—telling us that we need an entirely new economic model and a new way of sharing this planet. Telling us that we need to evolve.
― Naomi Klein, This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate

Hi everyone,

Have you read, “This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. The Climate,” by Naomi Klein? There is a passage in the book where she talks about her own process around climate disruption denial. She knew, but didn’t, because she didn’t want to, or felt too overwhelmed by the thought of what she might come to know.

… it is always easier to deny reality than to allow our worldview to be shattered…
– Naomi Klein

Only when she came to see the great potential for positive change was she able to fully embrace it. Part of that shift meant she stopped thinking of climate violence as “somebody else’s issue”, something the environmental organizations would tackle. She began to see not just the need to cope with this rapidly unfolding crisis, but the possibility that adequately attending to the reality of this moment could land us in a vastly better place than ever before. Urgency itself could be the catalyst to mobilize the many to come together in a new and entirely different way. Climate catastrophe needs to not be viewed as an issue over there somewhere to be attended to by those who like dealing with that sort of thing. It in fact, “Changes Everything”.

There is much to be done, and time is of the essence. Orange County for Climate Action formed in part from a similar conclusion. Climate crisis will affect us all – it changes everything – and – there is no sanity in thinking it is “somebody else’s issue”.

When under extreme stress, for better or worse, societies behave differently. If we, as a collective, hold the vision of what is possible, the different behavior can be that of positive movement for all of humanity. If we turn away, it will only get worse. We have a choice. I hold hope we will make the right one. It’s time. In fact, we are late. We need to evolve… everything.
