UN and USDA say, go vegan! | Thur Aug 6 4p-9p LU Veggie Grill Fundraiser
Hi everyone,
Did you know that several years ago the United Nations released a report stating that the world needs to become vegan? Earlier this year, the USDA concluded the same thing.
The reasons are many. Vegans and vegetarians have a much smaller water and carbon footprint. Additionally, to better address global poverty, we need to give up animal products. It is just simple math. In a rapidly growing population, our current high-meat consumption is not sustainable. There isn’t enough land available on this earth to provide for where we are headed, and there is nothing efficient about it. The amount of food currently being grown to feed animals so they can be eaten takes away from the global food supply. It is resource-expensive on every level. (And don’t think switching to fish is going to get us out of this, we have already dangerously over-fished the ocean to the point that certain systems are near collapse. With warming in the ocean, this is going to get worse, not better.)
To make matters worse, due to a very powerful meat lobby in the US, subsidies for animal agriculture conceal the actual price of these products, making meat, eggs and milk seem far less expensive than they actually are. In some areas of the US, this contributes to those with low-income finding high-meat diets more affordable than health-supporting fruits and vegetables.
Beyond all of that, there is the genuine horrific cruelty of what goes on in factory farms and that is where most in the US get their meals from. There is no two ways about it, animals in factory farming spend their entire lives held captive and in extreme suffering.

We have more and more research to confirm that humans are not the only sentient beings.
“… advances in cognitive ethology (the scientific study of animal intelligence, emotions, behaviors, and social life) have now… [shown] that many other creatures also display a complex range of emotions, highly evolved communication skills, compassion for others, and even intelligence that rivals- or surpasses- our own. These ground-breaking studies force us to ask some uncomfortable questions about our place in the world, and have caused leading experts to call for a radical rethink of the way we treat other animals.”
– Everything You Think You Know About Animals Is Wrong
Due to these many reasons and more, it is time for us all to begin making the change in what we eat. The good news is, eating more plant-based foods is what many health experts recommend to decrease the risk of many diseases. While we “do the right thing” for animals and this earth, we will also be choosing to support our own best health and well-being.
The only remaining obstacles for most people are habit, and skepticism about the “yummy” factor. For any of you that are local, here’s your chance to find out how extremely tasty vegan foods can be.
Come join us this coming Thursday, August 6 4p-9p, for our Annual Living Ubuntu Veggie Grill Fundraiser at the Irvine Spectrum. Mention “Living Ubuntu” when you order any time between the hours of 4p-9p,and we will receive 50% of the cost of any food, beverage (yes, they have alcohol), dessert you purchase.
I will be there at 6p after participating in the TRE Group Shake at 4p. Come have dinner with me and the Living Ubuntu team. Bring your friends and family. Let’s have some fun!
Let’s all enjoy how incredibly yummy the food is there, and, help support Phase 4: Continuing in the Community (Trauma Recovery for East African Refugees in San Diego) at the same time.
