Trauma is universal. No one lives on this earth for very long without having some sort of trauma happen. It is just part of being human, stuff happens. Any life-threatening event that co-occurs with feeling helpless can give us trouble unless we fully resolve the experience.

Large numbers of soldiers returning from war are truly suffering and it would be beyond ‘bad enough’ if that was the only aspect of PTSD we needed to address. Or if it was only when something hugely catastrophic like 9/11 occurred, but it’s not.

We also have to contend with natural disasters and car accidents, school shootings and domestic violence, dreaded diseases and medical procedures that make us panic… not to mention the myriad negative effects that stem from cumulative, chronic everyday stress.

It’s time for change. We need a recovery paradigm that addresses the body, is more accessible, less costly, more effective, well-suited for various cultures, and can accommodate large numbers of people.

Many local refugees are dealing with all of the same things we are, plus the ramifications of having come from situations awful enough that the only way to survive was to flee. They lost all that was once familiar… and many that were family.

This fall we seek to launch Phase 3: Trauma Recovery for East African Refugees in San Diego, an 8-week pilot study with 40 female refugees.

This same model of recovery could be applied in the future to many different high-risk, under-served communities. It can greatly reduce the cost while increasing effectiveness and access for many more people who need help. In this “evidence-based” society, we just need to document it works.

Phase 3 is a critically important step toward helping local refugees recover and changing the paradigm. We need your help getting the word out about this project. To launch this fall, we need to raise $18,600 within the next two months.
