Expanding the Circle of Compassion

Samantha Power at TED

Samantha Power recently spoke at TED about the world’s response to genocide 20th century.  And of Sergio Vieira de Mello, a Brazilian UN diplomat who for over 34 years negotiated with the world’s worst dictators and helped their people survive the crisis.

Watch her passionate talk below.

I loved her introductory story where one of the newspaper journalists asked Patricia Schroeder, a US Congresswoman about the Rwandan genocide.

“Why is there so little response out of Washington?  No committee hearings, no denunciation, no people getting arrested in front of the Rwandan embassy…”

She replied, with great honesty.

“In my congressional office… we’re getting hundreds and hundreds of calls about the endangered ape and gorilla populations in Rwanda, but nobody is calling about the people.  The phones just aren’t running about the people…”

Will you join the “endangered people’s movement”?  And help end the genocide in Darfur.
